Awakening

The boy’s eyes stretched wide and kept a close view of the unraveling disaster. Limbs shook and snapped, releasing debris onto the forest floor. Leaves fell from the heavens and covered his boots. An incredible burst came from the distance near the mountain peak. The top of the hill crumbled from the vibration and sent huge shards of ice to the ground below. It was an eruption, or perhaps something else. Whatever happened was internal and threatened to collapse the entire mountain. Panicked cries came from far as villagers ran into their homes.

Several quakes followed the first and disintegrated more of the ice. Pieces as large as temples rolled down the face and over anything in its path. Kaylen watched as the land slowly got torn apart. Just when all seemed lost, the movement ceased. Blood circulated through his fingertips as he released his hold on the tree. He carefully lifted his head and peered out over the bushes. Remnants continued to fall from the heavens and collected in the valleys underneath. It was devastating and came out of nowhere. He watched the turmoil from the safety of the forest and wondered why it had happened.

“Where is that?” Kaylen asked, looking at the soaring cliffs.

“That is Kalinjar. Or as some call it, City of Ice.” Aellier replied, scanning his text.

“We have to make sure they are alright!” The boy said, taking a step forward.

“Kalinjar is hundreds of miles away. You cannot help them, they are on their own. We need to get to Tilhame, to seek help.” The book insisted, resting in the pouch.

The words angered the boy, but he knew that they were true. He let out a sigh and proceeded to the treeline. In between steps, a sharp breeze came from over the grass. It was vile and entered directly into his soul. He had felt this once before, a gentle and familiar sting. Kaylen hesitated and then kneeled next to the thick brown bush.

“What are you waiting for? Let’s go!” Aellier begged, wanting to leave the forest.

Kaylen ignored his request and sat quietly.

Bright flashes came from the sky. Black clouds circled overhead and began to play an evil song. The rhythm changed from slow to fast as thunder added to the symphony. Raindrops fell from the heavens and saturated the dry ground. Stationary puddles turned into flowing streams as the water intensified. Kaylen raised his hood and covered his face from the onslaught. A low rumble came from the distance as a figure closed in on the spot. Torak turned to black and waited for his arrival. Faint traces of red pulsated behind the storm clouds and grew in size by the second.

A single hiss shot out from the depths as the red lights became brighter and brighter. Soon, the sky was engulfed with his terror and a gurgling roar ejected from his chest. Fire came through the clouds and burned the fields in front of him. Searing heat scorched the trees and sent Kaylen onto the ground.
